During these years, with synthetic microbiology as the main line, he has combined the upstream basic research breakthrough of activating the dark matter of natural products of microorganisms with downstream microbial engineering technology, focusing on the frontier key scientific issues in the field of intelligent biomanufacturing. He combines upstream research in synthetic biology with bioreactor engineering to form a research on biological processes, clarifies the mechanism of cellular metabolism transformation through integrated basic research on strains, processes, and equipment, and creates an international alliance for the industrialization of avermectin, helping China's avermectin industry to top 1 in the world. High-value-added products such as porphyrins, coenzyme Q10, and astaxanthin have also achieved efficient, green, and low-carbon biomanufacturing, forming important academic influence and promoting the industrialization process of various products in the biological process. He has published over 300 SCI papers in journals such as Nat Biotechnol, with a total citation count exceeding 13,000 and has edited or co-edited seven academic monographs (four in English). He is a recipient of the National Natural Science Foundation of China major instrument, innovation group, international cooperation major, and key project awards, a national outstanding young person (final evaluation excellent), a national-level candidate of the New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project, chief scientist of the 973 Program and the National Key Research and Development Program for synthetic biology, and an excellent candidate of the Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2011, he won the first prize of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Science and Technology Progress Award; in 2014, he won the Royal Society of London - Roche Young Scientist Award; in 2016, he won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award; in 2017, he won the WuXi AppTec Life Science Research Award; in 2021, he won the first prize of the Heilongjiang Province Technology Invention Award; in 2022, he won the silver award of the Global Science and Technology Innovation Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization; he founded the journal Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology and won the Outstanding Editor Award in 2023.
